SEVERAL years ago the band Redgum wrote the popular song I was only 19.

It was the tale of a young Vietnam war soldier caught in a trial-by-fire scenario, whereby his decision-making had to be instant and a lifetime was affected thereafter.

This same quicksilver thinking applied in Fr Dan Benedetti's case, although fortunately his "crucible" moment was more akin to the return of a prodigal son than being scarred in battle.

Fr Chris Ryan is rector of the Missionaries of God’s Love (MGL) Seminary in Melbourne. In 2006, he was appointed to coordinate the journey of the World Youth Day Cross and Icon across Australia. He spent 12 months, from July 2007 to July 2008, travelling with two teams of young people and has recently published a book, In the Light of the Cross, reflecting on his experience.

SYDNEY, Australia, JULY 15, 2008 (Zenit.org ).- World Youth Day brings so much festivity that it is easy to get caught up in the glamour and forget that it is a pilgrimage, said a deacon who led a catechesis session today.

Catechesis sessions are part of the youth day experience. They generally consist of teachings from religious, discussion and the celebration of Mass. The first of the catechesis sessions began today in various Sydney venues. Deacon Daniel Strickland was part of one of the more lively sessions, held in Hyde Park.
